About
This gallery includes current (last 20 years) and future (2070, based on five regional climate models) species distribution and density maps for 26 terrestrial breeding bird species of the Pacific Northwest, selected as indicators of four habitat types. These maps were produced using models based on climate and vegetation data, along with 3 million bird observation records made available through the Avian Knowledge Network. The gallery also includes conservation priority maps for all 26 species and their associated habitat types: conifer forest, oak woodlands, grasslands and riparian forest. All maps in this gallery were downloaded from the web-based North Pacific Climate Change Avian Vulnerability decision support tool, available at Avian Knowledge Northwest (www.AvianKnowledgeNorthwest.net). The tool can be used to view spatially explicit projections of climate change impacts to the 26 bird species, explore regions of high conservation priority, analyze changes in bird habitat and bird communities, and identify new monitoring locations which can improve our understanding of climate change impacts. These products resulted from a NPLCC-funded collaboration among Point Blue Conservation Science, Klamath Bird Observatory, American Bird Conservancy, and many data contributors. – For more information see Veloz et al.
